Recognizing the critical role digital payments can play in deepening financial inclusion, the Government of India’s Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a Partnership in 2015 specifically focused on increasing the use of digital payments at point of sale, particularly among low-income consumers. Over 35 key Indian, American, and international organizations have partnered with the MoF and USAID on this initiative.
To guide the efforts of this partnership, USAID commissioned a study to understand the current behaviors and perceptions towards digital payments among consumers and merchants in low-income communities in India.
